RE: RV Price Busters

I didn't buy from RV Price Busters but can speak to some of the warranty questions. The key is the builder if they stand behind the warranty your good if they don't then it doesn't matter where you buy. I bought in Texas and live in PA the local dealer for my brand or fiver doesn't like to work on rigs he didn't sell. So I have limited to no dealer support. To go one better the dealer I bought from in Texas is no longer in business. To make a long story semi short I've never had a warranty issue. Now I do have to make my own calls to the factory. I do have to schedule where to take my rig to get X or Y done on it but the company stands behind my camper and helps me work everything out. So far no problems. It's not as easy as just running up the road to where you bought it but then some times running it up the road doesn't work either if they or the builder don't really back the camper you bought. RE: Campground Sneekers aka Theft of Services Increasing?

Playing the Devil's Advocate here...What if these folks are simply parking and sleeping much like they would at Wal-Mart? What are they stealing then? A parking place? I am not talking about the folks that use the facilities such as power, showers, dump station, etc. just folks who park for the night then move on down the road. Maybe by offering such a thing these folks would consider coming back to the same park for an extended paid stay in the future. In a for profit campground that is the basic service a place to park that is safe and allows you a good nights sleep without having one ear open for mischief makers around your rig. I've over nighted in campgrounds (and paid for it) and in rest stops. I assure you the sleep in the rest stops isn't as deep. That is what you should be paying for. The idea that "Well I didn't really use any thing there but their land" is the entitlement claim someone else brought up. IT's THEIR LAND they get to charge for the use of it if they want to. Not paying is stealing. By your logic It is OK for me to park my rig on your front lawn and spend the night as long as I don't use your water or electric. Mallo

RE: comparisons???

I imagine that when everyone is shopping for a 5th wheel that many make up some comparisons. Is there anywhere on here that everyone post them in a blog? Can we start posting them on here? Just an idea but seems if many people do it why not share them? Happing Camping Joe What worked for us would work for some but not all. We made up a score sheet we used against every fiver we liked. Rating all the things WE felt were important. Then adding in scores for tank sizes weight height etc etc. All very biases toward our likes and dislikes but then applied evenly to all the rigs. The rig we're in scored second highest of all the trailers we looked at we couldn't afford number one. So even if you do work out some form of comparison chart or scoring system there still comes the point where you have to make the monthly payments. Mallo

RE: What's in a name?

Our rig is a 2004 Prairie Schooner 5th wheel trailer. Good comfortable rig, but nothing fancy. We call it our camper (or sometimes camping trailer). In one of the forums I used that term ("camper") and received not 1 but 3 private messages telling me that term was a poor choice. One person claimed it "cheapened" the lifestyle, and another as much as called me "white trash". We've been happily "camping out" about 4 or 5 months each of the past 7 years since I retired, and I've never been chastised for my terminology before. What's up with this? Gets me I call our rig a camper. Because that is what it is. A very nice very comfortable camper. Why would people get their panties in a twist over that? Mallo

RE: Landmark or Carriage

Hi everyone, I would like to get your opinion's on which manufacturer makes a better 5er. The Landmark by Heratland or the Cameo by Carriage. Everyone knows the routine from the dealer's. Both are close in price and quality. I just would like to have some comments from other people regarding these 5er's. Thanks Barry I like the Cameo more but part of it comes down to which company has the floor plan you want in the lighter shorter rig. If it really is a coin flip for you try to get out to the factories (the two are close to each other so you can do one on one day and the other the next.) so you can get a feel for how the innards are done. RE: What are your plans for '09??

My husband and I don't usually go too far from home, we love the eastern shore, and are able to camp there a fair bit. Does anyone have plans already for next year? I'm just dreaming already about next year. Share your travel plans for the upcoming season with everyone! Post moved from TT Forum to General Forum Moderator - TT Forum Big trips; PA to Padacuh for the quilt thing then on to California up to Oregon over to Yellowstone to DC to Home. PA to the Hitchhiker Rally in Ill. From there down to Little Rock, down to Houston over to Baton Rogue and home maybe. and four or five small trips. Mallo

RE: Uniroyal Laredo tires for 5ver - what's your experience?

Hello Skyfarmer, Although I have no personal knowledge of Uniroyal products please accept my two cents based on having followed posts regarding tires in this and another similar forum. It appears that over recent years many tire companies have switched their manufacturing to mainland China with some disastrous results to the US consumer. Many tire brands previously considered to be the best money could buy were found to be worthless junk if produced in China. The only RV worthy product that I have NOT seen any negative reports on are Michelins LT tires therefore when I replace the tires on my 12k pound 5er next summer that is what will be purchased. Yes, they are about the most expensive tire on the market but one must consider the fact that unreliable tires shouldn't be run at any cost. When a poorly constructed tire goes out it doesn't just spring a leak but explodes like a small bomb frequently taking the adjacent tire, plumbing and siding with it. Sound fantastic but true. Just for another point of view. I have over 6000 miles on our HH running around 12,000 pounds with the Uniroyal Larado's and they're been champs. Mallo

RE: Maybe It's Just Me

I always use the shower the campground provides... Unless its raining then I use the shower in the fiver. Unless there is mud on the ground then I use the shower in the fiver. Unless it's filthy then I use the shower in the fiver. Unless it's too long a walk and I'm feeling bad then I use the shower in the fiver. On the other hand the wife never uses the facilities in the campground. It's all a matter of choice. Mallo

RE: Wondering about next year

With the way the economy is going i'am not in a mood to even make reservations for next year,Just wanted to know if anybody else feels the same way? Thanks We have trips planned for all but four months next year. Some small just down to DC for the Cherry Blossoms. Some grand out to California with a side trip to Yellowstone. At the worst even if we cancel every reservation we have made we'll be out 100 bucks or so. Mallo

RE: Buying a 5th wheel in this economy....

What is a reasonable percentage reduction in the MSRP for a very nice 5th wheel (approx $75,000 sticker) given current market conditions and the significant reduction in RV sales? Thanks I think your going about it backwards. I'd find a short list of units that do everything you want them to do. Then shop best price for those units. Trying for a blanket MSRP discount doesn't work when your list of units may be something like; New Horizons Excel Top of Line KZ All three of those companies build a unit with around the same base MSRP. The difference is New Horizons is a factory order only and they don't dicker much. So your going to be pretty close to MSRP if that is the rig you really must have. Excel doesn't make a lot of units and from shopping them the discount rate tends to be less then some of the companies that roll out higher unit counts. KZ makes a very good unit but some of the bigger "discounts" I found were on their units. In our experience we had been looking at a KZ which we could of gotten for over 30 percent off MSRP and a NuWa at less then 30 percent off. Mallo

RE: 4 Season Fifth Wheels

Right now we're staying near Washington DC it's in the low 20's over night mid 30's during the day and the Hitchhiker LS has been a champ and after dickering on price was way under 70K. Comfortable enough I can see going places even colder. But we don't keep the trailer 75 so not trying to keep the place too warm helps. Mallo

Ant Pros or Cons,Its a 2006 We did the factory tour in 2007 and thought Crossroads did a nice job on their units. Mallo

RE: Titanium RV's

huntram, I'd be very interested in the answer here as the Titaniums were close in costs to the hitchhikers but I never could get past the factory rep when it came time to buy. (He didn't want to answer questions at the Hershey RV show and that bugged me.) But the wife really like them for a while. Mallo

RE: Walt Michaels RV closed

Why is it that these various RV dealers don't see the value in offering good service? A customer may buy an RV every ten years or so, but he probably goes somewhere for service several times a year. Instead, no sales = out of business. I'll tackle this one. Sales departments are revenue departments. Service departments are cost centers. Every business management "expert" will tell you that. Companies in the US largely try to trim cost centers to the bone. RV dealer ships read all those same books put out by "experts" they take business management classes and they follow that mantra. And it would be a good mantra IF the RV builders put out nothing but quality units. But they don't expecting the dealers to "make it right". Some dealers are setup to make it right and therefore have better repeat business. Other dealers look at it as its a commodity market make as much up front as possible and forget the back end. Both are business models. Both work or you would never see an RV dealer setup with minimal service. It is buyer beware try to establish a relationship with your dealer try to have a rapport if you don't move on. We almost forced ourselves to buy a KZ because the nicest dealer in our area sells them. (Family Camping Center near Pottstown) And before I get flamed I prefer service but I'm a relationship buyer not a price at all cost buyer. Mallo

Wrong! The bank price went up 2 1/2 percent. So lets keep trying folks! Since you already know then you know so there is no need to tell you what you know. Mallo

The wife and I put up places we have camped with the RV. We don't count places where we've just pulled off and grabbed a few hours sleep as camping. 8) Mallo

RE: Question for RV'ers

This is our second year in our new pop up trailer, we have stayed at numerous campsites all over CA. and have noticed that alot of people who own the bigger RVs and travel trailers, will come in set up there rig and you never see them for the rest of there stay. I understand that they have all the comforts of home inside but why bother even going to a campground, why dont you just stay at home and park in the street. When we bought our PUP I told the wife that in no way is this going to take away from our outdoor camping experiance. To each his own but it seems funny to me why go through all that trouble just to sit inside all day. We have been to some beutiful places, and I couldn't imagine not being able to enjoy the great outdoors. For us it depends. This week my RV is replacing a hotel room so the amount of time outside is lower. The week before we were sightseeing so again not a lot of time in the campsite more time out and about the week before that we were camping and spent most of the time in the camp site. It all depends on why we're at a campground. Mallo

RE: Campground Electricity

I guess I'll be the first to take the contrary position. We've been full time for 2 1/2 years now, been in 174 campgrounds, in about 40 states so far, including 6 in Mexico, and have never had a problem. I bought a portable unit for the Mexico trip, used it once and it's stored away. I think this a myth about campground electricity problems and is a carryover from years past, and hasn't been valid in a long time. I've met people who say the device saved them, but have never met one person (and most RV's don't have them) who complains that their electronics got fried. If nobodies been burnt, then nobodies been saved. Save your money. Campground we stayed out about 10 days ago have major electrical issues. Including a warning at the camp ground entrance not to start your AC as their electric couldn't handle them. We had around 108 volts most of the time we were there. Running the coffee maker and the microwave at the same time caused the EMS to trip out the circut because of low voltage. So yeah you've been lucky. Mallo
